How To Use Your Blog To Generate Leads

blog to generate leadsI was working with some clients recently discussing goals for the 2013 year and one of them mentioned that their priority this year was to enhance their online presence and to also make it profitable.  Excellent.  We all love profit, but how do you make your online presence profitable?

One of the ways is to ensure that you’re actually using your web site and some of  your other online real estate to generate new leads.  And if you understand the concept of inbound marketing and using content to help yourself get found, then you understand the value of a blog.  The next step is then getting some action of that blog and being able to measure that action.

A blog needs to be optimized for both search engines and for lead generation.  The search engines need to understand what key phrases and topics you’re an expert on and your prospects need to understand that once they find you, there are other things that they can do to continue to learn more from you.

Add Calls To Action (CTA).  So many blog posts provide some great educational information (and that’s critical), but they don’t tell you how to take the next step.  Including Calls to Action in your posts guides and directs the reader to go about taking the next step. The CTA has 3 distinct characteristics:

  • it tells you what to do (i.e. get access to your complimentary ebook)
  • how to do it (i.e. add your email below and click submit)
  • and why (i.e. start improving your lead nurturing activities now!)

2. Test to see what works.  It’s always a good idea to test different wording and images because we tend to respond in unique ways.  If a call to action isn’t getting response after a week, change it out and try an alternative.

3. Increase your blogging.  More fresh content gets you higher ranking with the search engines and, no question, makes it easier for people to find you.  In fact, Hubspot, leading content marketing system, suggests that businesses that increase their blogging from 3 to 5 times per month to 6 to 8 times per month, almost double their leads.
