Blogging Best Practice Guidelines—Your Checklist to Adding New Content

We all know that adding new and fresh content on a regular basis is important, but if you use a few key best practices when you blog, you can also keep that traffic on your site longer and get them to consume even more of your information.

1.  Focus key search term.

Every blog post should include one or two focus key search terms to support your SEO efforts.  Generally speaking, you’ll want to select longer tail key search terms for the focus terms for your blog posts.  For example, rather than just the more generic term “software development”, maybe you use “software development project planning”.

2.  Optimize each post. 

Using a plugin like WordPress SEO by Yoast is ideal because it simply lists out the key items you need to do to optimize a page or post.  The list includes  ensuring your focus term appears in your article heading, your page title, page url, your meta description and an appropriate number of times throughout your content (approximately 2 to 3% of your total word count).

This plugin is probably the easiest tool to use to ensure that you optimize your blog posts each and every time.  Simply follow the instructions and look for the check button to turn green as you select your focus term, update the title of your post, the url, the meta description and the alt tag for your image.

3.  Link to other content.

Ideally, you should include a link to some other relevant content on your blog.  That encourages people to spend more time on your site and gets them to look around and see what other intelligence you might have to offer.

To help with your SEO goals, include links to other content you’ve created as well as to relevant content or resources from other sources.  Be sure the relevant specific keywords are part of your link.

Including external links to some other relevant content elsewhere on the web also helps to demonstrate that you’re well-versed on your topic and recognizes other experts online.

4.  Call To Action. 

Every blog post should include a call to action.  This could be to download an ebook you offer or for a checklist or a consultation or something similar.  Suggesting they give you a call or contact you is a call to action and can be used occasionally but it’s rare that you’ll get much traction on that because people want to take a look at what else you have to offer before they spend the time to talk with you directly.

5.  Include an interesting and relevant image. 

Images are a great way to make your content much more aesthetically pleasing.  Images break up the text to give the eyes a rest and are necessary for creating appealing content.  When you add an image, it’s necessary to put the alt text in when you load the image so that the search engines can identify to what key search term is related to that particular image.

6.  Social Sharing.

Blogging best practices also includes ensuring you are sharing your content on social networks and that you’re making it easy for others to share your content as well.  Today, it’s pretty easy to install a plug-in that makes these social sharing icons appear and activate.  Be sure to encourage visitors to share your content by making it easy to do so.
