Last night, I attended the LinkedOC event featuring SocialMedia Examiner’s Michael Stelzner. Stelzner’s new book, Launch—How To Quickly Propel Your Business Beyond the Competition, is available in digital format now and generally released next week.
Stelzner kindly shares all the details on what he’s used to make SocialMedia Examiner successful and that’s one of the keys behind his accomplishments—sharing what has value and not expecting anything in return. He talks about giving true gifts that make you valuable to people and I think he’s captured it right there.
We can use all the technology tools in the world to automate whatever we do and those tools will change again and again over time. The one thing that doesn’t change is people—people are constant. And in Stelzner’s words, at their core, they don’t change. And I completely agree. At the end of the day, people still want to buy from people. They want to know the people or person behind the business. His real message is to stop trying to sell to your customers, and simply walk side by side with them and see what happens. He’s suggesting a real mindset change, from ‘how can we sell you’ to ‘how can we help you’.
Stelzner argues that people want access to great insight, access to great people, and recognition before they want products and services. Much of what he talks about is really humanizing the business and spending the time to gain the trust to earn the sale. I like what he has to say and I’m a big believer of showing the personal side of a business.
There’s a good deal being written on this subject right now so it certainly has merit. I’m a big believer of its value and am certain that it should be on the mind of every business owner. How are you taking this notion and using it in your business?
