Is Marketing an After-Thought for your Business?

This past week, I presented the 7 Steps to Small Business Marketing Success.  At the beginning of the session, I asked participants for feedback on the biggest challenge they face with marketing their business.  Two popular comments always emerge when I ask this question:  time and money.

I agree that these are both huge concerns when you look at investing in a marketing plan for your business.  Not only is it a time commitment but it will certainly require some commitment of funding as well.  Regardless, if you are to grow the business, you will need to spend some time and money to get any kind of desirable results.

When clients and prospects tell me they don’t have the time or the money to invest in marketing their business, I always ask them to ponder the following question:

“If you had a meeting tomorrow with a client that could produce a couple thousand dollars in revenue, would you cancel that meeting?” 

Absolutely not is the response I get.  Then why do you put off marketing your business and refrain from making a commitment to its growth?

If marketing is an after-thought for your business, growing your business will be an uphill battle and almost impossible.  One of the most cost-effective means of gaining some exposure for your business is through Social Media.  There is a lot of education out there right now on Social Media.  Educate yourself and use it to your advantage.  I’ll be posting a series of articles on Social Media over the next couple of weeks.  Also, you can check out from American Express for hot topics for small business owners.
